A Chart-Show Recording From Late 2000

Lexy & K-Paul are a Berlin techno duo, Alexander Gerlach ("Lexy") and Kai Michael Paul ("K-Paul"), formed in 1999. Their breakthrough single "Freak" came out on 14 August 2000 on the Low Spirit label, ahead of their debut album Loud, released later that year.

This clip captures that breakthrough on television rather than in a studio: it is a recording of the duo performing "Freak" on The Dome 16, the RTL II chart show broadcast on 10 December 2000, on a bill that also included Anastacia, Craig David and Westlife. Uploaded to YouTube by the fan channel EuroTrance Club under the title "Freak (Live at Dome)," the 137-second clip is a condensed chart-show performance segment, far shorter than the studio single and not an official music video.

"Freak" outlasted that broadcast: it reached No. 20 on the German singles chart and stayed charted for 14 weeks, and Lexy & K-Paul went on to win the Echo Award for Best National Newcomer Dance Act in 2001. Low Spirit later gave way to the duo's own label, MusicIsMusic, distributed through Kontor Records, which revisited "Freak" with a new mix on the 2015 compilation Gassenhauer — a later chapter distinct from the 2000 TV performance shown here.
